HTC Home Customizer FAQ

1. What is the HTC Home Customizer?
The HTC Home Customizer is an application to customize the interface and options of the HTC Home Plugin.

2. What is the HTC Home Plugin?
The HTC Home Plugin is an application for Windows Mobile devices, created by HTC, that give’s you a finger friendly interface to your phone and some of it’s components. This software has been “ripped” from the original HTC device it was shipped on, modified, then repacked to be installable on many different devices. There are several versions floating around the internet, but only some of them support all of the options of the customizer. The HTC Home Customizer will download a compatible version for your device if the plugin is not detected.

3. What’s the difference between v1.5 and v2.0 of the HTC Home Plugin?
v2.0 of course is a newer revision by HTC and includes many fixes and options over v1.5. v2.0 adds options like selecting the number for a QuickDial contact, link to AccuWeather site from the Weather tab, functional Profiles tab, and Tab Order setting via the Settings -> Today screen. As of 9/15/2007, it is only available for Windows Mobile 6 users and is the plugin downloaded by the customizer.

4. Do I need the HTC Home Plugin to be installed before the Customizer?
No. When you run the HTC Home Customizer it will check your system to see if the HTC Home Plugin is installed. If not, it will prompt you to download and install it directly to the device.

5. Do I have to use the home plugin that is downloaded by the customizer?
Only if the version included with your phone does not work correctly. You may use any version of the HTC Home Plugin you wish, however some options may not work. These issues include but are not limited to tab order problems, custom weather not working and appearances not being applied. If you’re using a stock ROM (one that shipped with your device) you shouldn’t have any problems using HHC. If you’re using a “custom” ROM (one developed by community members) then you may experience issues and should use one of the CAB versions.

6. The HTC Home Plugin is installed to the ROM of my device, can I still use the customizer?
If your plugin is in the device’s ROM (came preinstalled or installed with ROM upgrade), you can try to use the customizer as-is, however some options and files may not be overwritten properly. It is suggested you disable the version that came with your device and manually install one of the supported plugin versions.

7. I selected “Custom” for my weather database and selected my city. Why won’t the weather update?
There could be several causes, but the most common is that your device probably needs a soft-reset. HTC/AccuWeather did not provide a way to pull your local weather, so N2A from XDA-Developers decided to do it for us. As of v1.0 Final, you must be using a compatible version of the HTC Home plugin in order for custom weather to work. Any of the CAB version available on this site or through HHC auto-download will work with the custom weather option. Another common problem is Team Mobile’s proxied data plan. There may be a workaround for this but you will have to search our forums or try to get help from sources such as PPCGeeks.com or XDADevelopers.com.

8. I’m finished making customizations. Can I remove the HTC Home Customizer?
Yes. The customizer is safe to remove after you have applied your desired changes. You will obviously lose the ability to change themes/appearances, but the plugin will still be completely functional.

9. Can I change the layout of the plugin? Can I have more than one tab of the same type?
No. There is only a limited number of things we can change for the plugin. That includes graphics files (appearances) and options that were built in by HTC (weather settings, launcher apps). Currently there is no way to change the layout/size of the plugin itself , the system data (email, sms, missed calls) that is displayed by the plugin or the text color at the top of the plugin for the provider info and date.

10. When I press the Email button on the “Home” tab, it takes me to my MMS/SMS messages. How can I fix this?
This is a known issue with the HTC Home Plugin. The workaround is to create a POP account on your device, then press the Email button again. It should now take you to your email messages. You can then remove the POP account if unneeded.

11. Can I restore a backup from a v1.5 plugin on a v2.0 plugin?
Mostly. The only part that will fail (silently) is restoring your QuickDial contacts because the registry format for these entries was changed.

12. Can I restore a backup from a v2.0 plugin on a v1.5 plugin?
Yes. All settings and options should work correctly.

13. I’m having problems with *fill in the blank*, can you help me?
Please post a topic on this site’s forum and I will try my best to help you resolve the issue you are experiencing.
